The Origins of Futura

Have you ever wondered where the no-frills typeface, Futura, came from? Created by Paul Renner with similar ideologies of the Bauhaus movement, the typeface was commercially released in 1927. The typeface is geometric with only the essential elements that evoke a sense of efficiency. Futura was also the first typeface in space, with its letters on a commemorative plaque left by the Apollo 11 crew.

Today, popularity has spread among art directors that there is now a movement called, “Art Directors Against Futura Extra Bold Condensed”. Even with those boycotting, Futura remains one of the most used/loved san serif typefaces today, with companies such as Absolute Vodka, Domino’s Pizza, Louis Vuitton, Best Buy, Redbull, Volkswagen, and Costco; all using Futura in there company Logos.
